Working with another therapist on a case consultation regarding recommendations for a complex client in crisis

About the Workshop

Mental health professionals are notorious for going above and beyond to help others, especially clients and patients they serve. As a result, it can be common to have looser boundaries and struggle to say no, know when to say no, determine the right time to do it, and feel comfortable and not guilty for doing so. When done properly, holding healthy boundaries not only helps your clients grow their skills, but also helps preserve your well-being and avoid risk of burnout. In this 2-hour WMHCA accredited workshop fulfilling the WA State DOH Professional Roles and Boundaries requirement, we will go beyond the basics of boundary setting and deep dive into how to specifically tackle boundaries with high-risk clients, professional boundaries with yourself to help you get clear on what your needs are, and boundaries with management/supervisors, depending on your setting.

What you get:

  • We’ll break down common boundaries and pitfalls mental health professionals encounter with clients/patients, colleagues, and themselves

  • We’ll critically think through case examples of dual relationships vs conflict of interest and how to best respond to these complex and nuanced ethical situations.

  • This workshop will offer a balance of educational content and hands on practice of the material.

  • This is highly interactive, so come prepared to share your experience, ask questions, and offer input.

I'm here to keep you engaged the whole time with lots of anectotes, case examples, and opportunities for you to share and practice boundary setting. Whether you are in the hospital, school setting, private practice, or community/non-profit, this workshop is for you!

Organizations I Have Worked With

Facing Challenges with a High-Risk Client?

Do you have a client with chronic suicidality, psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other complex mental health challenges, and are looking for assistance through professional consulting to gain extensive tools to support your client with safety planning and evaluating for a higher level of care?

Do you have a client who is ambivalent or resistant to engaging in safety planning discussions and has difficulty agreeing to keep themselves safe?

Do you have a client hospitalized in an inpatient psychiatric or behavioral health setting and have experienced challenges navigating the system and coordinating their care for discharge?

Are you trying to figure out if you are the best fit to help your client immediately following a crisis?

Your client discharged from the emergency room or transferred to inpatient treatment and you're wanting to make sure you have all the resources and tools to best support them

Why Michelle Solomon for Professional Consulting

I have near a decade of experience working in several different inpatient psychiatric settings in the Greater Seattle area with both voluntary and involuntary patients, including three years running groups in a partial hospitalization program. I’d love to support you with extensive safety planning and assessment for suicide risk, best practices for assessing and managing delusions and psychotic features, navigating the complex hospital and involuntary (ITA) court system, advocating for the needs of your clients who are hospitalized, and determining the best options for a higher level or transfer of care.

I can help you determine if you have capacity to continue working with your client, offer recommendations for alternative treatment options, provide suggestions for how to facilitate delicate conversations around their safety risk and what boundaries you have with continuing to work together or not, and instill confidence knowing you are doing the most possible for your client.
